God Is Teaching Me To Face Down Fear

I can honestly say that I have had a consistent relationship with fear. I call it a relationship because for me it can seem like a give and take pattern. When fear gives me the heart pounding, sweaty palm, dodgy eye feeling, I gave it respect and compliance.

Over the last couple of years the Holy Spirit has been working with my perspective on what fear is, and how the enemy uses it to keep us from reaching our potential. From embracing confrontation, starting my own business, to restarting this blog the Lord has been teaching me to face down fear and move forward in victory.

What Does Fear Look Like In My Everyday Life?

For me fear typically manifest its self as procrastination. Avoiding daunting tasks until the last minute became a life style of mine. At least if I failed then I could blame it on the limited time I devoted to the project, and I could tell my self that If I tried harder that it would have turned out better. I thought that if I failed at something after trying my best that it meant my best was not good enough. And in turn, that meant that I was not good enough.

Procrastination brought a lack of excellence, which opened the door for me to experience failure on a regular basis. This fed my fears of inadequacy, instead of feeding my faith in God to grow and develop me and my gifts in His way and His time.

Feed Your Faith Not Your Fear.

The Lord has been teaching me not to use my failures or even my successes to define my self-worth. Instead, I am learning to rely on what His word says about me.

If we think of fear as a wall of fire the devil creates and places between you and all that God has for you than we can think of the Word of God as the fire extinguisher that will began to destroy that wall every time we use it. We have to intentionally start reading our bibles to find out what God has to say about the area where we experience fear.

Choosing to mediate on scriptures like Romans 8:37 feeds my faith to move forwards with the confidence, that no matter what happens, God wont be disappointed in me, and won’t change his mind about the call and purpose he put on my life.

What Do We Do When We Feel Fear?

We can not wait until the fear we feel is gone to move forward, because more often than not, moving forwards is how we remove the fear.

We can get used to using fear as an alarm to keep us safe from disappointment and rejection. The enemy rings that bell every time we get close to discovering more about God and who he created us to be. That means, that right on the other side of that fear is our break through.

When I feel tempted to yield to fear I try to remind my self that If I move forward today, then I can wake up being the person who conquered that fear tomorrow.

Let’s Talk!
