God Given Gratitude

What made you realize how serious the Corona Crisis was? We all have that moment. Maybe you were aware of the magnitude from the beginning. Maybe you had a family member fall ill. For a lot of us, it happened when we began to witness the wave of shut downs sweep our nation. For me, I was in Branson.

My sister and a few friends advised me to pick up some essentials before my husband and I returned home from a trip. Admitly the care free vacation fog had not lifted and I strolled into Target thinking that we could grab what we needed and be on our way. My husband and I walked towards the baby section carrying on with laughter and conversation when suddenly a hush swept over us both. The emptiness of the shelves hit us like a weight and we walked through the aisles like our legs were stuck in molasses.

Before vacation I had been online, going from store to store looking for makeup that could hold up well under humidity. I have sensitive skin so thats a hunt I’m used to. This was something different. A terrible thought had occurred to me, “my daughter needs something and I’m not sure I will be able to get it for her”. Just like that my priorities has shifted. Now I was going online and from store to store, scavenging for essentials.

The truth is, at first I felt a considerable amount of fear. I hated the idea of not being able to provide even the simplest of things for my daughter. Then I was filled with gratitude.

I have been fortunate to never have to wonder how I will buy the things my daughter needs. I have a wonderful husband who is considered an esssential empoyee so he did not not loose his job. I have a beautiful home and family so I do not have to be alone, and, through technology I can keep in contact with other friends and family.

I do not believe that God creates bad things to teach us good lessons. He does promise that, through him all things work together for our good. If we allow Him, then, He can use our life experiences, good and bad, to strengthen our hearts and bring us closer to Him.

I don’t know what the post Corona “new normal” will look like for the world, but for me, I pray that I make it more of a priority to have gratitude for the things in my life I took for granted. I feel challenged to show good stewardship and to be intentional about safeguarding my speech from complaining.

We never know what life may hold for us from one day to the next. It’s important to take the time to appreciate the things we have now and to look for the ways that God is blessing each of us, big and small.
